Anxiety is the term given when an individual, or group of people, experience high levels of stress and anxiousness around everyday tasks and activities. Anxiety can impact people in social situations, employment/study, and general daily activities (e.g. leaving the house). The severity of anxiety can differ and is unique to each individual. This is not to say that one individual’s anxiety is less stressful than another’s, rather, that each individual experiences their anxieties in unique manners.
Depression is a condition that alters the mood, often making one dispirited and unable to feel interested in previously enjoyed activities. The longer an individual leaves their depression untreated, they could continue losing interest in a number of activities until there is very few, if any, left to enjoy. Depression can impact and influence individuals in a wide variety of ways. Similar to anxiety, how an individual experiences depression is unique and should not be compared to others and their experiences.
Anxiety and depression are both mental health conditions that are relatively recent in terms of medical history. In modern Australia there is very little threat to our lives, however, as humans we are hardwired to survive. This survival instinct is still prominent and can cause individuals to experience anxiety over tasks that may seem harmless to some. Depression has a similar origin but different reasonings. With minimal danger in Australia, survival instincts and skills aren’t needed. Without the need to protect oneself, or others, an individual can experience a lack of purpose. This lack of purpose can lead to a multitude of different responses, one being depression. These human reactions are not the only reason for mental health issues, traumatic and negative experiences can also alter how an individual manages their emotions. These encounters vary in their severity and can influence an individual’s anxiety and/or depression.
Anxiety and depression can lead to an individual isolating themselves. Isolation is very dangerous and detrimental to a person’s mental health as humans require stimulating social interactions and networks to function. Once isolated, it becomes very difficult to get help as there is very minimal access to support networks, such as friends and family members, however, it is not impossible.
Humans are very resilient and have the ability to overcome many difficult situations. It is always advised that people seek treatment for their conditions as soon as possible. It can be uncomfortable in the very beginning to discuss personal experiences, however, it is extremely beneficial in the long term.
Our friendly staff are here to chat to you about our Anxiety and Depression Counselling service.
Okay counselling is dedicated to providing a tailored Anxiety and Depression Counselling service for our clients using evidence based practice informed by established psychological and social work theories.
Only theories that can be adapted to the needs of each individual client are utilised. For both anxiety and depression, Cognitive Behavioural Theory (CBT) is a common method of treatment, as it works with an individual to change the way you view yourself and the world around you.
For treating anxiety, this can work towards recognising stressors in your daily life and begin to view these under a different lens. An example is relieving the anxiousness around social situations by changing the focus of concern. Instead of worrying about the people you will interact with, begin to notice how this group makes you feel. Do you think they are good people? Do you find yourself internally disagreeing with their opinions often? For depression, CBT changes the negative view of self, which greatly assists in finding a sense of purpose.
Another highly effective treatment option for depression that is utilised is solution-based therapy. This focuses on creating goals to work towards, which reinstalls a sense of self and purpose.
For depression, it is critical that an individual wants to engage with the treatment options for them to be effective. It is not an easy process to change your thought process or setting goals to achieve, especially if you do not believe you’re on track with your progress. However, it is important to seek treatment for depression to ensure that the condition doesn’t become detrimental to your overall wellbeing.
